Let’s talk about deadlines. Or as we designers call them: the ticking clock of doom that looms while we chase inspiration like a laser dot.
But deadlines don’t have to be scary. With a little planning (and a lot of snacks), timelines can actually be the secret sauce to creative success.
1. Start With a Paws Plan
Every project should have a clear roadmap. What’s due, when, and what are the milestones? Think: discovery, concept, first draft, revisions, final. Don’t just set a finish line. Map out the whole race.
2. Pad the Timeline (For Real Life Stuff)
Cats nap. Designers get sick. Clients disappear. Life happens. Always add buffer time between phases to allow for revisions, approvals, and unexpected curveballs (like your design file corrupting… again).
3. Communicate, Don’t Hibernate
If something’s slipping, say something. Designers aren’t mind readers (unless the brief says so). Regular check-ins = no surprises and fewer last-minute panic attacks.
4. Prioritize Like a Hungry Cat
What’s most important? Prioritize the pieces that move the needle. Not everything is “urgent.” Label things: critical, nice-to-have, or can-wait. Focus the team’s energy where it counts.
5. Stick to Scope, or Add More Treats
If the project grows (hello, scope creep), timelines need to adjust. Don’t squeeze in 5 extra deliverables without extra time or treats (read: budget). Set expectations early.
Deadlines can either be soul-sucking or soul-saving. The difference? Clarity, communication, and kindness (and maybe a scratch behind the ears).
Plan smart. Nap smarter. Deliver paw-some work.
